Alby’s best friend is a little boy called Sunni. Ever since Alby started at nursery I have had reports of the double act they have going on and the mischief they cause – which mostly revolves around splashing each other (and everyone else) with water, wrestling and throwing balls at each other in the ball pit. When Alby was off sick a couple of weeks ago I was told that Sunni would walk up to his picture and point at it as if to question where his friend was.
With such a firm friendship already established you can imagine the joy at the supermarket today when we bumped into Sunni out with his mum. You would think maybe that having spent the day together they wouldn’t be that fussed about seeing each other but oh no.
To set the scene a couple of weeks ago I bought Alby a Bushbaby mini rucksack. It is the diddiest of things with a loop handle at the top and a removable lead rein giving me two ways of keeping hold of him. This is my attempt at compromise with Mark who thinks reins are stupid but has yet to experience losing his son in the ladies clothing department.
Alby had grown very bored of being in the trolley, we were near the end of the shop and showing a level of organisation I was stunned by I had remember to pack the rucksack. So on it went, out came Alby and he was waddling about whilst I tried to find the best deal on facial tissues (a task which I’m sure they purposefully make incredibly tough).
Along comes Sunni, who had just woken up having a lovely nap in the reclined trolley seat. (Alby hasn’t slept in a trolley for about 6 months, I must ask Sunni’s mum what her secret is). Anyway, Sunni gets placed on the floor, the two boys stare at each other for about a minute and then we get taps on the head, bashes on the shoulder, a load of gurgling followed by them both knocking over three bottles of mouthwash apiece from the bottom shelf and clapping their hands.
I’ve seen Alby play with his friends in the nursery room and I’ve seen him play with his friends from outside nursery but I’d yet to witness a baby bestfriend meeting and it was the cutest thing. The slow recognition, the excitement and the mischief – he really is becoming a proper character.
